It is excitement as the 83rd edition of the Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateurs Golf open championship will officially tee-off at the lake side par-71 Entebbe club on Wednesday, 28th August 2024.

A rich history comes along with this championship whose defending champion Godfrey Nsubuga is roaring to go for a successful title defence.

“I am more than ready to defend my title. I have practicing well and hope for the best” Nsubuga, now based in the United States of America (USA) echoed to Kawowo Sports after his training session on Monday.

Nsubuga drives off at 10 minutes past 10 am and will play with John Paul Basabose with Shaka Kariisa, son to Next Media boss Kin Kariisa.

Perhaps, It will not be a walk in the park for Nsubuga, as the field of 120 golfers is ready to give their best.

Former winners Joseph Cwinya-ai (2021) and Andrew Ssekibejja (2022), Andrew Baguma, Ibrahim Bagalana as well as a number of seasoned single handicap golfers from Uganda and Kenya are ready to give their best shot forward.

Kenya’s legion of finest golfers is led by Adel Balala who tees off at 9:40 AM with Walter Tukahiirwa and Uganda’s national team player, John Musiimenta.

The other Kenyans in action include Edgar B. Kimani, Chris Owuor, Simon Karari, Rafael Lemingani, Ebill Omolo, Edwin Mudonge and George Themburu.

Vastly experienced Emmanuel Rutayisire, Jacques Byiringiro, Jean Hitayezu, Alphonse Kwizera and Samuel Muragijimana will represent Rwanda.

Burundi has Salum Hakizimana as towering Mark Mayen is South Sudan’s flag bearer.

The expectations, hype, pressure and honour associated with this open is a worthwhile experience for any top gross player, with a huge contribution to the world amateur points system.

This prestigious open has been held since 1932 when H. Davidson won the inaugural edition.
