The construction of the new stadium in Hoima City has taken off in preparations for the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations come 2027 due to be hosted by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The project which is expected to be complete in 18-months started with the clearing of the land and a formal meeting between agencies responsible to execute the project.

On Thursday August 15, the Minister of State for Sports and Education Hon. Peter Ogwang chaired a meeting at the site as works with the contractors was ongoing.

“What I did today was chairing meeting between Inter agencies, the city, Ministry of Works (consultant), Security, the client and of course the contractor who has officially and formally who has started clearing of the land to start construction of the stadium,” Ogwang told the media after a closed door meeting attended by among others Hoima City Lord Mayor Brian Kaboyo, Chairman National Council of Sports and Infrastructure for Pamoja 2027, Ambrose Tashobya, security officials and Summa representatives, the company responsible for construction.

Ogwang also revealed that the 20,000-seater capacity stadium must be delivered by December 31st, 2026.

“Our time in terms of implementing this project is 18 months and we have already spent one and half months on the mobilization.

“Now that work has started, the entire land is going to be secured, we are going to deploy police to ensure that nobody attempts to interfere with the contractor without written permission from the MoE & Sports.

“I want to confirm to the country that the Hoima City project is now taking effect in terms of its construction until its complete by December 31st 2025.”

According Ogwang, the cost of the project is $ 130 million and will have among other facilities including indoor sports arena with sports like Boxing, Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, swimming pool, athletics tracks and a training pitch.

“I have confidence that the company we selected has the capacity and will work 24/7 to ensure we achieve our target successfully.”

If completed in time as expected, the stadium will be one of the host venues for Afcon 2027.
