CAF Champions League: Orlando Pirates defy odds to win in Algeria

Orlando Pirates put up a spirited display to overcome MC Alger in the first leg of the quarterfinals of this season’s CAF Champions League.
The South African outfit claimed a 1-0 win in the game played on Tuesday at the Stade du Juillet 1962 in the Algerian capital, Algiers.
Youngster Mohau Nkota came of the bench and scored the lone goal of the game to extend Orlando Pirates’ impressive run in the competition this season.
The opening half saw the Buccaneers soak in a lot of pressure from the hosts but remained composed and resilient to thwart any danger.
The visitors went ahead to get the breakthrough in the 65th minute with Nkota scoring five minutes after coming on.
The hosts thought they had replied instantly through captain Ayoub Abdellaoui but his goal was disallowed after the referee ruled that Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine had been obstructed.
The win takes Orlando Pirates unbeaten run in the CAF Champions League to 11 games. The two teams will face off again on Wednesday next week with the winner on aggregate progressing to the semifinals.
In the other quarterfinal games played on Tuesday, Mamelodi Sundowns edged Esperance Tunis 1-0, Ah Ahly edged Al Hilal 1-0 while Pyramids outwitted FAR Rabat 4-1.
