Uganda were not impressive but found a way to win the 5th-place Semifinal of the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup.

The Rugby Cranes edged Burkina Faso 25-15 but it was the West Africans that got on the scoreboard first.

After a shaky start from Uganda littered with a couple of knock-ons, Burkina Faso went hunting expansively ending with Yamaeco Zana Claude grounding inside six minutes.

Utility back Philip Wokorach put Uganda on the board with a penalty before Shakim Ssembuusi completed a good backline move to score Rugby Cranes’ first try.

Wokorach would stretch over to create some more separation before slightly skewing the conversion.

However, Burkina Faso stayed locked in putting Uganda under pressure. Karembiri Gafour collected a goalline drop out and sliced through Rugby Cranes casual defence before swinging it out to Zebango Kiswendsida whose inside pass was intercepted by Timothy Kisiga who was offside. Bationo Bognomo scratched and dived over to bring the score 10-15 at the break.

The Rugby Cranes camped in the opponents’ red zone at the start of the second half forcing the Burkinabes to commit several infringements that led to the referee awarding Ugand a penalty try.

Burkina Faso went hunting again and they were rewarded with a try from Zebango who was at the end of a sweet move from a clean lineout take inside Uganda’s 22.

Wokorach extended the lead with a penalty with about 15 minutes to play and that was the last score of the game.

The win guaranteed Uganda a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup.
