Uganda Cup Winners Kitara FC will travel to Ethiopia next week to face Mechal Sports Club in a friendly game. The Royals confirmed that the game will be played on 14th July 2024 at Addis Ababa Stadium.

“We travel to Ethiopia next week to play Mechal Sports Club in a friendly match to mark their 80th Anniversary Celebrations.” The statement reads.

The team, formerly named Army SC and now referred to as Mekelakeya, is the second most decorated club in Ethiopian football history behind Saint George with 11 League titles and 13 Ethiopian Cup crowns.

Home to Uganda Cranes goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi, Mechal SC had their dominance in the early years of Ethiopian football winning six titles in the span of eight years from 1949 to 1956. After relative dormancy in the 1960s and 1970s, the club returned to its dominant ways in the 1980s by winning four titles.

The friendly game is part of Kitara’s preparations for the new season where they will play in the CAF Confederations Cup.

The team has been bolstering the squad by signing new players namely; Fred Amaku, David Ndihabwe and Ronald Otti.

Striker Jude Ssemugabi and towering defender Benjamin Nyakoojo have renewed their contracts to stay at the club.
