2025 Dolphins Swim Club Junior Championship attracts over 400 swimmers

Over 400 swimmers from 23 clubs have registered to take part in the 2025 Dolphins Swim Club Junior Championship that will happen this weekend, 12th and 13th April 2025 at Kampala Parents School in Naguru, a Kampala suburb.

The Dolphins Swim Club Junior Championship is a competitive and invitational championship organized by Dolphins Swim Club Kampala for swimmers aged between 5 and 11 years from the different clubs in Uganda. This year, the event welcomes Yawe team Kenya from Kenya which will be among the 23 clubs gracing the event. For Uganda, the notable clubs include:- Sailfish Swim Club, Aqua Akii Swim Club, Whales Swim Academy, Aquatics Academy and others.

The championship happens every year, attracting young swimmers who are very competitive and enjoy swimming as a competitive sport. This year’s edition will be the third edition after COVID-19; the event used to happen before COVID-19 but was halted for 2 years due to the epidemic before the return in 2022.

The championship, like most swimming galas, has events spread into different age groups that are 5-7 years, 8-9 years, and 10-11 years for both girls and boys. The selection criteria of these athletes consider athletes with a certain level of skill, who are very competitive and able to meet a certain swimming time. There’s a qualifying time for each age group and for each event, so whoever meets that qualifying time will is able to swim in this event.

This particular event will reward medals, certificates of both merit and participation to the different participants, individual trophies by age group, so everyone in each age group will be able to go home with a trophy. There will also be some hampers that will be given out to the athletes.

Dolphins head coach Tonny Kassujja explained why clubs stage championships like these;  “The opportunities that come with participating in this event is that it is highly organized and follows world Aquatics rules so it opens up the athletes to really understand the competitive rules whereas it’s also rewarding, but most all athletes are able to see what they have pins in the competitive environment.”

He continued stating that; “this is an event which attracts very many clubs so there’s a lot of networking meeting with friends and it also brings athletes closer to their parents because parents come in to support their children and you know these children, they love being around their parents and their peers so this is more of a team building event.”

The 2025 Dolphins Swim Club Junior Championship will have competitive events including freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly: individual medley where the athletes are able to swim all the events, mixed relays and individual relays.

Speaking about the security Coach Tony Kassujja says; “the place is very secure we all know that Kampala Parents is one of the safest schools around town it has its own security and also surrounded by police however for this event we will be using Uganda police as the head of security and we’ve got all the necessary documents and secured the environment with the help of Uganda police so you’re going to see very many men of uniform with their integrity from Uganda police who will be manning the security of the environment.”

When commenting about the results, Kasujja said; “The grading will be done by Uganda Swimming Federation now Uganda Aquatics; electronic timing system, so the results will be authentic and will be tallied by Aquatics officials.” He also states the results for the event will be pinned for everyone to access at the pool. The event will also have live coverage from different TV’s and YouTube, so people can follow the proceedings from there. There will also be live updates on Dolphins Swim Club Kampala X, Instagram and Facebook.

“If it rains, as we know that swimming is done in water, so swimmers know every weather is good weather. However, if the weather is bad, normally events are postponed but that is a technical call which will involve all the coaches and the organizing team.”

Though the event starts at 9:00 am, participants will have warmups between 6:00 AM and 8:30 AM and thereafter the competitions will be scheduled to start. The two-day event will run from 9:00 am up to almost 5:00 pm at Kampala Parents School in Naguru.
