Uganda is set to make a long awaited debut at the Brics Sports Games with the current edition happening in Kazan city, Russia.

The national chess team of Uganda traveled to Russia via Air Arabia flight on Sunday, 16th June 2024.

Chess will be held at the IT Park named after Bashir Rameev and shall have individual (Blitz and rapid) as well as team event.

The Ugandan delegation was led by Eng. Emmanuel Mwaka, the president of Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) who also doubles as the team manager.

Uganda will field four players; International Master (IM) Arthur Ssegwanyi, Fide Master (FM) Haruna Nsubuga, Woman Fide Master Claire Ivy Amoko and Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Shakira Faith Ampaire.

These players will be handled by Harold Wanyama, as the head coach who is expected to travel later.

Eng. Mwaka expects a great gallant display for team Uganda, with lots of positives to pick from such a prestigious tournament.

“We are excited that the Uganda Chess team will make history as the first sports team from Uganda to play in the Brics sports games. We expect to give our best in the matches and also learn a great deal from the tournament” Eng. Mwaka stated at Entebbe International Airport upon the team’s departure.

Eng. Mwaka lauded the Government for the support that is being used to help the different national teams travel.

IM Ssegwanyi, arguably the top outstanding player for team Uganda is glad that such a tournament will help them gel and learn from the Grand Masters of the game.

“The Brics sports tournament is very important to us players. We shall face tough grand masters as we expect to learn from them. We are also ready to give the best in the tournament” IM Ssegwanyi remarked

FM Nsubuga, like IM Ssegwanyi remains positive of gallant outstanding performances.

“We travel with our heads up. We shall give 100 percent in every match played with hopes of doing well” FM Nsubuga noted.

WFM Amoko is optimistic about a great showing from the tournament, a typical learning curve for their journey in the game.

“As chess players, every tournament is presents a platform to learn a thing or two. Definitely, we shall improve our game after taking part in this global tournament” WFM Amoko hinted.

About the Brics sports Games:

The 2024 Brics Sports Games have 27 different sports disciplines with 90 participating countries, involving 4751 athletes at 17 sports venues.

Chess has the exciting blitz and rapid formats with 120 number of participants competing for 6 sets of medals.

Chess will pawn off on Tuesday, 18th June until Saturday 22nd June 2024.
