Why Denis Onyango’s Sundowns parted ways with coach Rhulani  

Denis Onyango and his teammates at Mamelodi Sundowns will have a new coach following the exit of highly rated youthful Rhulani Mokwena.

In a shocker, Sundowns and Rhulani part ways with the club stating the decision came after an agreement between the two parties.

“Mamelodi Sundowns and Rhulani Mokwena amicably concluded an agreement bringing to an end Rhulani Mokwena’s employment as Head Coach,” a statement read on the club’s social media platforms.  

“Sundowns wishes to express its gratitude to Rhulani Mokwena for his contribution to the successes and achievements of the Club during his tenure as Head Coach.

“Rhulani Mokwena will forever be part of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family and the club wishes him all of the very best with his future endeavours.”

Kawowo Sports understands that Rhulani’s exit is attributed to a tense relationship between him and Sundowns Sporting Director Flemming Berg.

Sources reveal that the two didn’t have a good working relationship and the club backed Flemming over Rhulani in times of conflict.

The 13-time South African champions however didn’t commit to keeping the club’s objectives and expectations as important in the decision.

“The decision of Mamelodi Sundowns was taken by the Board taking into account the objectives and expectations of the Club and was not influenced or based on the recommendation of any individual associated with the Club.”

For the meantime, Onyango will have coach Manqoba Mngqithi leading charges as the team gears up for preparations for the upcoming season.

Under Rhulani, Sundowns played 91 games winning 60, drawn 22 and lost just 9.

Sundowns will have a busy next season competing in the league, CAF Champions League, domestic competitions and is one of the four African clubs to feature at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
