Kutchi Tigers will have to wait another year for a season double after failing to get past Wanderers in the quarterfinals of the UGT20 League in an edge-of-the-seat encounter.

On a wicket that was suitable for spin bowling, Wanderers was asked to bat by Kutchi Tigers. Didier Ndikwibimana went out cheaply but a 100-run partnership between Wasim Butt (53) and Suleiman Sharif (58) repaired things for Wanderers before a late collapse saw them finish on just 140/7 in their 20 overs.

In the run chase, Kutchi Tigers were comfortable until they lost 3 wickets for just 17 runs and that slowed them down. Wanderers put in a few tight overs that eventually made the contest close with 11 runs required off the final six balls. Emilie Rukiriza was the hero for Wanderers in the final over, his judgement on the rope denied Kutchi Tigers a six that should have sealed Wanderers’ fate with five runs required off two balls. Wanderers held their nerve to nick the league champions by two runs.

In the afternoon game, Ceylon Lions made light work of Avengers to set up a semifinal clash with Wanderers. Robinson Obuya swash-buckling 72 was enough to win the game for the Ceylon Lions. The Ceylon Lions have yet to drop any points in the T20 season so far.

In Jinja, Tornado defeated Budo in a short game to set up a semifinal clash against Rounders who fought hard to win against travelling Nyakasura.

Nyakasura was in trouble early on at 28/3 but a valiant knock from Brian Asaba (44) and his younger brother Joseph Baguma (31) helped them to get to 136 all out.

Rounders got out of the blocks early but a loss of wickets in intervals slowed them down and only a late tail wag saw them get over the line by just one wicket.

Wanderers is the only side in the semifinals that has won the T20 title while the other three will be chasing their maiden T20 crowns.
