In the years 2005, 2007 and 2013, Mawokota Ssaza football triumphed to success in the famous Buganda Masaza Cup Championship.

There are now 11 years, and the sweet victory has not been smelt or felt.

The 2024 edition is envisaged to be one season of promises; particularly to the Mawokota team.

With the grueling group stages down and dusted, Mawokota is among the eight teams confirmed for the quarter finals.

Mawokota needed a 1-0 win over Kabula for the victory in Masengere pool with Mathias Kasadha the hero.

Busujju led the standings in Masengere group and Kabula were second placed at the expense of 2022 champions Busiro, Ssese and Buvuma.

Mawokota made the grade to the last eight as one of the two second best third placed sides.

Journey thus far:

It has been a roll coaster journey for Mawokota this season with several challenges and provocations for the management, players and technical docket as well.

It all started with the renovation of the shs300m stadium in Mpigi as the team manager Denis Bugaya aimed to restore the past glory of the Buganda county.

Shake-up in technical team:

Additionally, Bugaya’s decision to reshuffle the team’s technical staff and bring in Kitara Football Club head coach Brian Ssenyondo as Mawokota head tactician proved to be the turning point.

This was after the sacking of Steven Bogere and some members of his backroom operation.

Ssenyondo has since witnessed crucial identical 1-0 wins against Ssese, Buvuma and Kabula on the final match day which proved decisive for the team’s progress to the next round.

The gaffer is working alongside Richard Nkosole Richard (1st Assistant coach), Hakim Ssenkumba (2nd Assistant and Fitness), Bahati Asuman Luzige (Goalkeeping coach) and Bashir Basittu (Analyst).

Brian Ssenyondo turned around the fortunes for Mawokota Ssaza football team

The entire technical team formed a revamped Mawakota technical bench for this year’s Masaza Cup tourney.

But the fortunes to progress were not all attributed to the technical bench alone, Bugaya, a legal expert also proved pivotal when he petitioned the match result in the return fixture against Ssese where he accused the hosts of fielding unlicensed players in the match Mawokota had lost 1-0.

Following his petition, the players’ tribunal and disciplinary committee ruled in favour of Mawokota and the result was overturned as a walkover taking home 3 points and 3 goals against the defendant (Ssese).

This pivotal 3-0 result, coupled with three 1-0 wins and four draws saw Mawokota garner a total of 16 points losing only two matches against Busujju and Kabula in a 10-match group stage fixture.

Despite finishing third in the Masengere Group, the 16 points by Mawokota bettered any third-placed team in the three groups of Masengere, Bulange and Muganzirwazza.

They progressed together with Kyaggwe which finished as the second-best team in third place with 15 points.

Besides Mawokota, the other quarter finalists are; Buddu, Kyaddondo, Busujju, Kabula, Buweekula, Ssingo and Kyaggwe.

A new champion awaits to be crowned after the dismissal performance of last year’s winners, Bulemeezi.

Airtel Uganda, Centenary Bank, Cbs radio, BBS Telefaina, Kansai Plascon are among the sponsors for this tournament that does not permit FUFA Big League, Topflight division and national team players.
