Steven Vincent Taylor, an English former professional footballer with Newcastle United Football Club recently visited Uganda, on a special invitation of Motherwell Sports Academy.

The defender who featured for all the English underage teams and the senior national team expressed delight to work with the Ugandan academy that was introduced to him by celebrated youth coach Patrick Gwayambadde.

“I am excited to be part of Motherwell Sports Academy’s amazing journey.” He stated.

“I was delighted to meet the people and witnessed the amazing work of the children and their coaches. We tried to make opportunities not only from footballing field where I have the expertise but from all walks of life. We are trying to promote Ugandan football throughout the world. Recently, a couple of Ugandan players were in Dubai with the teams that we work with.” Taylor added.

Taylor joined the Mutungo based academy players and actively engaged in the work-outs, passing on special skills with a few tips here and there.

He offered the comprehensive football training and development opportunities to the youngsters, vowing to link the footballers to professional clubs.

Motherwell Sports Academy director, Paul Kayongo was humbled by the visit of the former England International.

“I am extremely happy for the visit of Taylor in Uganda, specially to our academy. We look forward cementing this relationship and hopefully, it opens the doors for many of the Ugandan players to Europe and other parts of the world for professional football. Within our 10 year development, we think that an academy should be able to have modern facilities and have enough space to give our youth to develop ambition and competition as a way of developing their careers” Kayongo, who is also president of Uganda Woodball Federation stated.

Taylor played 215 games for Newcastle United between 2003 and 2016, scoring 13 goals.

He also played at Wycombe Wanderers, Portland Timbers, Portland Timbers 2, Ipswich Town, Peterborough United, Wellington Phoenix in Newzealand and Odisha in India.

His managerial career kicked off in 2022 at Gulf United in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) before switching to Al Qabila Sports Club.
