Uganda 1-0 Guinea: The Cranes return to winning ways at Namboole | 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers

Uganda Cranes overcame Guinea 1-0 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers Group G encounter at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole on Tuesday night.
Allan Okello curled home a great free-kick in the 36th minute past Stade de Reims 2 goalkeeper Soumaila Sylla.
The Cranes were dominant throughout the game, and they could have won by a big margin but clinical finishing eluded forward Muhammad Shaban.
Coming from a 3-1 slip to Mozambique in the previous game, Uganda needed this exact comeback in front of about 20,000 fans at the stadium.





Joseph Paul Put, head coach for Uganda Cranes, made four changes from the Mozambique game in Cairo. In came goalkeeper Alionzi Nafian, Ronald Ssekiganda, Travis Mutyaba and Rogers Mato.
Alionzi replaced Isima Watenga, Ssekiganda came in for the injured captain Khalid Aucho, Mutyaba started ahead of Jude Ssemugabi, and Mato returned after serving a match suspension, taking over the slot for Denis Omedi, who saw a red card in Cairo.
Defender Elio Capradossi captained the Uganda Cranes in the absence of the skipper Aucho.




Uganda commenced the game brilliantly, forcing three corner kicks inside the first quarter of the game.
Kenneth Ssemakula shot high over the Guinea goal in one of the first attempts for the hosts.
Guinea center forward Yadaly Serhou Guirassy, who features at Borussia Dortmund, attempted a distant effort but it flew over on 24 minutes.
On the half-hour mark, Muhammad Shaban missed a free header off Okello’s inviting corner kick, and moments later tapped wide from Abdul Azizi Kayondo’s delivery from the left.
Mamy Camara was cautioned for a foul on Mutyaba that resulted in Okello’s well-taken free-kick on 36 minutes as Uganda Cranes took the lead.




Uganda Cranes lost defender Elvis Bwomono through injury and his place was taken up by Timothy Awany at the start of the second half.
Ten minutes into the second stanza, Okello maintained his brilliant show on the evening with a cut-back defended.
On 59 minutes, forward Calvin Kabuye replaced the injured Shaban who had moments earlier witnessed a goal-bound shot blocked.
Defender Bevis Mugabi stepped up with a timely block, orchestrating a move before releasing Mato on the left.


Ssekiganda picked up a late caution with five minutes to play before Jude Ssemugabi replaced Travis Mutyaba.
Goalkeeper Alionzi saved from close range in the 87th minute from Aliou Badara Balde and Guirassy shot over the bar deep in added time as Guinea suffered a slip days after a disappointing stalemate with Somalia.



Uganda Cranes come to 9 points and climb to third on the six-team log, three points adrift of Algeria and Mozambique.
Algeria hosts Mozambique at the Hocine Ait Ahmed Stadium on Tuesday night.
