Thunderbirds Rugby Club is not only the oldest women’s rugby club in Uganda (founded in 2003) but is also the most successful by trophy count. However, for all this wealth of history and success, there is one chapter they are yet to write; hosting a circuit on the Uganda Rugby national 7s series.

But now the wait is finally over as they will make history when the 2024 Kyadondo 7s kicks off. Thunderbirds, the women’s senior team at Kyadondo Rugby Club, will become the first-ever women’s team to host a circuit on the Uganda Rugby national 7s series.

Kyadondo 7s, featuring both men’s and women’s competitions, will be played from August 24-25 at Kyadondo Rugby Club.

The event was officially launched on Thursday morning under the theme “Celebrating Our Pioneers, Charting New Paths.” Former players, coaches, and officials of Thunderbirds and some from the general women’s rugby committee in Uganda will be recognised during the course of the 2024 Kyadondo 7s.

“We are very happy that URU accepted to have the Thunderbirds host this event. Thunderbirds has been part of this club for more than twenty years now… We have had so many ladies who played rugby here initially and are spearheading the growth of women’s rugby across all the regions (of the country),” said Kyadondo Rugby Club chairperson Brian Tabaruka Tindikawa.

The Kyadondo 7s circuit has been organised and will be run by an all-women committee of eleven led by Joanita Warry Ssenfuka.

Equal Opportunities For All

It’s only recently that the national 7s series featured both men’s and women’s competitions for all circuits. Six core women’s teams are competing in the 2024 Nile Special 7s Series, up from four last year.

This year, the men’s and women’s teams will receive equal prize money and awards from the hosts, the union and its sponsors. Every circuit winner will collect one million Uganda shillings and the overall series winner will take home five million shillings.
