"Stop Crying About NUP Expansion Of Regional Offices, Open Yours Too, Leave Bobi Wine Alone" Gen Otafiire Fires Back At NRM

Internal Affairs Minister Gen. Kahinda Otafiire has defended opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, over the recent establishment of regional offices by the National Unity Platform (NUP).
Speaking in Kampala, Otafiire, who is also a senior member of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), said the opposition party is fully within its rights to open offices across the country.
“Is there any law that prohibits Kyagulanyi from opening a regional political office? Tell me any law that bars him when he holds a license from the Electoral Commission,” Otafiire remarked, stressing the legality of the move.
His comments follow NUP’s recent inauguration of its western regional office in Mbarara City, coming just months after the party commissioned its eastern regional headquarters in Iganga District.
Kyagulanyi, during the launches, revealed that the party acquired land and constructed the offices discreetly to avoid political interference and ensure smooth operations.
Otafiire warned NRM leaders against focusing on criticism of the opposition instead of strengthening their own grassroots presence. “If NRM is weak or unwilling to work, stop complaining about Kyagulanyi. Borrow a leaf and open yours as well,” he said.
Political analysts note that NUP’s regional expansion is part of a broader strategy to solidify grassroots structures, increase mobilisation, and maintain close contact with supporters as the 2026 general elections approach.
The minister’s comments are seen as unusual given his affiliation with the ruling party, but many interpret them as a call for fair competition and encouragement for all parties to strengthen their local networks.
Otafiire’s message also underscores the growing importance of political infrastructure in Uganda’s multi-party democracy, where regional offices can help parties better engage with citizens and organise for campaigns.
As the election season draws closer, the debate over regional offices highlights the challenges and opportunities for both opposition and ruling parties in mobilising support across the country. Otafiire’s remarks leave no doubt: instead of bickering, parties should focus on action and outreach to citizens.
