Shalulile hands Mamelodi Sundowns first leg advantage

Peter Shalilule’s second half strike was the difference as Mamelodi Sundowns FC a 1-0 victory over Esperance Tunis in the first leg of the quarterfinals of the CAF Champions League.

The Namibian finisher got all the important goal as the Brazilians edged the closely contested encounter played at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

The goal arrived in the 54th minute with Shalulile tapping from close range after Jayden Adams squared the ball to him.

The game witnessed coach Miguel Cardoso, currently at Mamelodi Sundowns facing his former paymasters.

It should be noted that Cardoso joined the South African club last year and had eliminated them from this competition in the previous season while in Tunisia.

Mamelodi Sundowns dominated proceedings right from kickoff but the visitors opted to sit back and hit on the counter.

However, the South Africans could not find realistic chances despite enjoying majority of the possession.

The two teams will face off again next week on Wednesday with the winner on aggregate progressing to the semifinals.

In the other CAF Champions League quartefinal match-ups lined up today, record winners Al Ahly host Al Hilal, Orlando Pirates are away to MC Alger in Algeria while FAR Rabat plays away to Pyramids of Egypt.
