World Rugby has released the pools for the final men’s and women’s rounds of the 2024 World Rugby HSBC 7s Challenger. The two competitions will be played simultaneously from May 18-19 in Munich, Germany and Krakow, Poland respectively.

Uganda’s Lady Rugby Cranes 7s are in Pool B with Argentina, Paraguay, and Papua New Guinea. They have played against all pool opponents, except Paraguay.

Women’s Pools for 7s Challenger 2024 Krakow:

  • Pool A: China, Thailand, Hong Kong China, Czechia.
  • Pool B: Argentina, Uganda, Paraguay, Papua New Guinea.
  • Pool C: Belgium, Poland, Kenya, Mexico.

The tournament will be played at the Henryk Reyman’s Municipal Stadium in Krakow.

On the same weekend but over 600 kilometres away at the Dandestadion in Munich, the men’s final round, will also be played.

The Rugby Cranes 7s are in Pool B with Hong Kong China, Tonga, and Mexico. They have only played against Mexico this season.

Men’s Pools for 7s Challenger 2024 Munich:

  • Pool A: Uruguay, Germany, Georgia, Papua New Guinea.
  • Pool B: Hong Kong China, Uganda, Tonga, Mexico.
  • Pool C: Kenya, Chile, Portugal, Japan.

After the respective final rounds, the overall top four teams from this season’s 7s Challenger Series will compete against the overall bottom four teams from this season’s HSBC SVNS Series in Grand Final qualification tournaments.

The top four teams in those Grand Finals in Madrid, Spain from May 31 to June 2 will qualify for the respective men’s and women’s 2025 SVNS Series.

What are Uganda’s chances?

For the men, Uganda stands no realistic mathematical chance of progressing to Madrid. Their 7s Challenger campaign drowned in the sands of Dubai and failed to recover in Montevideo. Munich, should success of any kind be achieved, will serve only as consolation.

However, the women are looking good on their debut season. Despite winning only 2/6 and 3/6 matches in Dubai and Montevideo respectively, those wins have earned them successive top four finishes. Their work in Krakow is cut out for them; another top four finish will guarantee a ticket to Madrid.
