Young rugby player Matthew Musasizi, 18, is diligent, aggressive, a leader, team player, an all rounder, perfectionist, beast of sorts on the rugby field yet as calm as a cucumber off the playing arena.

The senior six student at St Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK) recently claimed the valuable player of the tournament accolade at the Fresh Dairy Secondary School Games hosted by Ndejje Secondary School.

This was the second MVP gong for Musasizi in school sports after winning the award at the 2023 East African Games hosted in Huye city, Rwanda.

Just like his international role model, Antoine Dupont, the French national team Rugby captain, Musasizi is well decorated and very comfortable in several positions as a scrum half, fly half, full back and a winger with exceptional kicking skills.

Still like Dupont, Musasizi commenced his rugby career as an early teen, six years ago while in senior one upon joining SMACK.

“I started playing rugby when I joined SMACK in S1” he vividly recollects. “At that time, I also used to play football which I stopped a year later while in S2. Since then, Rugby has been my game and I enjoy it to the brim” Musasizi who currently features for the second team of Platinum Credit Heathens (The Stallions) remarks.

At SMACK, Musasizi religiously affiliates to the famous Lourdel House, the home of sports.

Musasizi kick started his elementary education at Kampala Junior Academy before he joined Silver Spoon Primary School and joined SMACK for O-Level.

He was readmitted at SMACK for Advanced Level and he is currently in S6, studying Mathematics, Economics, French, ICT and General Paper.

Again like his role model Dupont, Musasizi also speaks the English and French Dialects with comfort.

I dedicate my special accolade to my parents and family. They cheer me on and support my schedule for both academics and Rugby plus sports in general. I know my mum as an extremely clean individual. She drops her guard at the end of my matches. It’s amazing to see her, hug me after a muddy game. Special dedication to my SMACK teammates, fellow SMACKISTS and the school administration at large. We all get to the rugby pitch with different skills and abilities. My success is dependent on the team’s effort and contribution. We celebrate and have each other’s backs as one. My coach is rather phenomenal and the sky is the limit for us. Matthew Musasizi, SMACK Rugby player

Big Dreams:

Musasizi harbours big dreams of succeeding in education and playing professional rugby.

“I want to successfully complete my studies and possibly take a career in finance related stuff. I also yearn play professional rugby by first working out for promotion to the Platinum Heathens Rugby Football Club main stream team” he aspires.

Locally, Musasizi is a big fan of Uganda Rugby Cranes star player Phillip Wokorach and Alvin Nkamba, the current head coach for the SMACK rugby club.

He vividly recalls the Uganda U-20 victory (21-17) over Madagascar during the 2023 Africa Barthes cup in Kenya as the sweatest moment.

In a quick flash, he would wish to forget that humbling 12-15 loss in the final of the recently Fresh Dairy USSSA rugby duel at the Ndejje University main stadium.

On any day, he would prefer his favourite dish of rice and fish curry.
