Partnerships, Evidence Based Plans will Minimize Air Pollution: KCCA ED. Buzeki

According to environment experts, motor vehicles, bad cooking, solid waste are the leading causes of air pollution, which multi sectorial stakeholders say can be addressed through joining hands. 

During a public dialogue organized by Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) held on Thursday 30th April 2026 , stakeholders called for collective action to combat air pollution in Uganda which they committed to jointly implement through endorsing for accountability and action.

The dialogue convened under the theme, “Clean Air, Shared Responsibility: Advancing Multi-Sector Action for Urban Air Quality,” attracted participants including the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Ministry of Works and Transport, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Makerere University, Kyambogo University, Solutions for People (S4P) and members of the media among others.

The KCCA Executive Director Haj. Sharifah Buzeki called for a stronger Partnerships, public awareness, monitoring among others in a bid to minimize air pollution.

She warned that deteriorating air quality poses a serious threat to public health and the city’s long-term sustainability.

 “Kampala’s rapidly growing population will only intensify air pollution challenges if we fail to act collectively,” she said.

Among the measures done by KCCA according to the ED, includes: promotion of no-motorised transport, pollution champion in different areas in Kampala, supporting greening initiatives, waste management, Institution partnership among others.

“We need for sustainable solutions through coordinating clean air action plan guided by evidence, expand monitoring coverage, re-enforce collaboration with institutions , CSOs, partners.

She announced that KCCA, Ministry of works and others partners are in advanced stages to introduce more electric buses to reduce congestion.

The Director Public Health and Environment at KCCA, Dr Zalwango Sarah emphasizes the need for collective responsibility in addressing the air pollution crisis in Kampala.

Eng. Kibuuka from the ministry of Transport d Worked urged vehicle owners to submit them for inspection for air pollution compliance to combat emissions following a study by UNEPI on road transport 2024 that revealed that passenger and other vehicles heavily polluting the city.
