Mezo Noir nightclub to reopen after police investigation into fatal spiking incident

Mezo Noir, one of Kampala’s popular nightclubs, is set to reopen its doors following a temporary closure that was initiated after the tragic death of 23-year-old Martha Ahumuza Murari.

The club had suspended operations on March 21 to allow for thorough police investigations into the incident.

On Friday 4th April, Mezo Noir officially announced plans to resume operations after authorities concluded their inquiries.

Initial reports from the police indicated that Martha’s drinks were spiked leading her to collapse at the bar.

Mugabo, the prime suspect in the case, together with his brother Joseph Kalenzi, reportedly rushed her to Kampala Hospital, where she was placed on life support. Tragically, she later passed away.

In the wake of the incident, both Mugabo and Kalenzi were detained for questioning. Meanwhile, the victim’s family expressed their determination to seek justice for their daughter’s untimely death.

However, after several weeks of investigation, authorities have found no evidence implicating the two men or any other Mezo Noir staff members in any criminal wrongdoing.

The club, in a statement released on Friday, confirmed that police had officially cleared the employees and released them from custody.

Our esteemed clients, following our notice of temporary closure to you, we wish to let you know that;-

1. Our hearts continue to go out to the family and friends of our esteemed client for the loss of such a young and fine soul.

2. Following the unfortunate incident, we decided to temporarily close to allow Uganda Police and the relevant justice sector stakeholders to conduct investigations.

3. The investigations have found our staff innocent and they have subsequently been released from police custody. Any contrary rumours in the media are false, malicious, unfounded and please treat them with the disdain and contempt they deserve.

4. We shall continue to serve you in our usual relished environment of absolute safety and high end standards in the entertainment industry.

5. We will advise you on the exact date when our doors shall be opened again, but assure you that this will be very soon.

The exact reopening date for Mezo Noir has not yet been confirmed, but management says preparations are underway to resume normal operations in the coming days.
