Maj Gen Sabiiti now out of danger – police

Traffic police have assured the public that Maj Gen Muzeeyi Sabiiti’s life is out of danger after he was involved in a serious road crash on Saturday evening in Lwengo district while returning from a traditional wedding function.
Sabiiti, who heads the National Military Industrial Complex, was travelling when his vehicle reportedly collided head-on with a truck carrying cattle. Superintendent of Police (SP) Michael Kananura, traffic police spokesperson, said investigations into the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Following the crash, Sabiiti was airlifted by a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) helicopter to Nakasero Hospital in Kampala for emergency treatment. The extent of his injuries has not yet been disclosed.
Kananura noted that further details would be shared during the police’s Monday media briefing but stressed that the General was out of immediate danger.
“I will give details tomorrow [Monday], but I want to inform you now that the General’s life is out of danger,” he said.
Reports indicate that Sabiiti was returning from the introduction ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni’s granddaughter, Nsasiirwe Karugire, who was getting married to the son of Lt Gen Sam Kavuma. When asked whether anyone had been arrested over the crash, Kananura said it was too early to assign blame.
“You cannot arrest anyone before knowing who was in the wrong. It is something we’re still investigating,” he explained.
Sabiiti, a seasoned officer, served as deputy Inspector General of Police from March 2018 to December 2020, before being replaced by the late Maj Gen Paul Lokech. He currently serves as General Manager of UPDF Industries in Greater Luweero.
He has previously commanded the UPDF Military Police and the elite Special Forces Command (SFC), which is tasked with protecting the President, the First Family, and strategic government installations.
