Local Gov’t PS Ben Kumumanya opens workshop for Production, Commercial to boost services delivery in Masaka Sub-region.
Following the introduced the Parish Development Model as a strategic intervention to move households from subsistence production into the money economy through increased production, value addition, commercialization, and enterprise development. The success of the PDM according to experts greatly depends on effective local government structures and technical officers who directly support communities.
Ministry of Local Government convened a workshop for Production Officers, Commercial Officers, Extension Workers, and Input Dealers to play a critical role in guiding farmers and producer groups to improve productivity, adopt modern farming practices, access markets, and efficiently manage Agro-Processing Facilities
During the opening of the workshop held on Wednesday 10th June 2026 at Brovad Hotel in Masaka, The Permanent Secretary Mr. Ben Kumumanya represented by the Commissioner for Local Economic Development, Mr. Namara Anthony he said that stakeholders in the value chain while guiding farmers and producers support in the reduction of post-harvest losses, creating jobs, increasing household incomes, and stimulating local economic growth.
“I am confident that the deliberations will contribute significantly towards improved service delivery, enhanced productivity, and accelerated socio-economic transformation in the Greater Masaka Sub-region. I wish to emphasize that extension services should not only focus on production, but also on enterprise development, value chain strengthening, business management, market access, and investment promotion” he said

He called upon local government accounting officers to enhamce strategic leadership and supervision to boost commercial production.
“I urge Local Government Accounting Officers to continue providing strategic leadership and supervision to technical departments, while District Production and Commercial Officers should work closely together to integrate production and commercialization within Local Economic Development frameworks” he said
He hohlighted that despite Maska sub region has potential in agriculture, livestock and fisheries, thee face a challenges including: limited extension coverage, weak market linkages, inadequate value addition, low commercialization levels, and limited technical capacity for management of Agro-Processing Facilities among others.
