JW Uganda Open Brings Golf, Tourism and Sustainability to Lugazi

The 2025 Johnnie Walker Uganda Open has brought new life to Lugazi Hills Golf and Country Club, with the par-71 course now buzzing with the energy of golfers, fans, and visitors from across the region and beyond.

For many attendees, it is their first experience of the sweeping valleys, forest edges, and sugar-green hills that make Lugazi one of Uganda’s most scenic golfing destinations.

The tournament has once again proven that the Uganda Open is more than a championship—it is a platform to showcase the beauty and diversity of the country.

Yet beyond the competition and fanfare, this year’s edition has also placed strong emphasis on sustainability.

Recycling bins dot the course, safety measures have been reinforced, and renewed efforts are being made to protect the greens.

The deliberate measures are designed to ensure that the thrill of competition leaves behind lasting memories, not damage.

“Golf depends on the greens, the air, and the landscapes, and it is only right that we care for these environments with as much passion as we celebrate them,” said Christine Kyokunda, Johnnie Walker Brand Manager at Uganda Breweries Limited.

“Through Diageo’s Society 2030: Spirit of Progress agenda, we are committed to creating experiences that bring joy today, while preserving the spaces that make them possible tomorrow. That is what it truly means to Keep Walking.”

The Open’s sustainability efforts go beyond waste management. Organisers have reduced single-use plastics, encouraged the use of paper cups, and sensitised both players and fans on mindful consumption.

Each small step contributes to a broader collective responsibility of protecting the natural spaces that host the game.

The impact has extended beyond the course as well. The tournament has boosted hospitality, transport, dining, and cultural experiences in Lugazi, injecting fresh energy into local tourism while ensuring the environment is safeguarded.
