How a Scholarship Transformed My Life After Years of Disappointment

My name is Sharon Akello, a 23-year-old from Gulu, Uganda. Ever since I was a child, I dreamed of studying in another country. I used to picture myself on a foreign campus—meeting new people and learning in a better environment. I’ve always believed that education is the gateway to a better future, not just for me, but for my entire family. But chasing dreams isn’t easy when you grow up in poverty.
I was brought up by my single mother, who worked tirelessly selling vegetables in the market just to send me to school. I always performed well, usually among the top students in my class. But when it came time to apply for scholarships, things kept falling apart. I applied for over 10 scholarships, both within Uganda and abroad.
