Team Ba’Fani and Team Wazee were perfect on the opening night of Season 10 of Friday Night Lights basketball at Lugogo Hockey Grounds.

The highlight of the night was the game between Team Luol Deng Foundation and Team Wazee which was tied 28-28 at the end of regular time. To determine the winner, it was announced that the first to score 3 points in overtime would walk away with the win.

In the thrilling opening tie of Matchday One, Team Luol Deng Foundation scored a 2-pointer that had the Wazee immediately on the back foot. However, in the very next play, Jeff Wamboko drained a game-winning three.

Team Wazee

“You can always count on Team Wazee to shake tables at FNL,” said team captain Chris Kyambadde.

With the opening game thrill, the tone was set for the rest of the evening.

Team Wazee would later win its second game of the night against Team Afande who probably had the best entrance of the night.

Meanwhile, Team Ba’Fani, led by the vocal Albert Ahabwe, had national team (Gazelles) star Lydia Babirye leading the way to their two wins on the night.

Team Agatha

Also going home with two wins was Team Agatha. Team Obleng and Team Sera picked up a win each but Team Comfort and Team Afande left empty-handed.

However, the tide can always change since the teams are playing each other in a round-robin format until the Grand Finale when the top four will face off in the semis for a place in the finals.

As has been the case previously, participating teams are expected to field a blend of league players, fans and celebrities in their lineups. Quex led out Team Afande with his ‘Kachumbali’’ hit, and later showed off some impressive ball-handling skills on court. Team Comfort was introduced by an all-girls singing group Warafiki while Team Sera’s Jokwiz Klean (her colleague at NBS) sampled his ‘Boom Boom’ dancehall song (where he features Jamaican legend Beenie Man).

At some point, veteran TV personality JKazoora and rapper Wonder JR (’Parte Yani’ featuring
Ruyonga and Zex Bilangilangi) engaged in a 3-point challenge, cheered on by Sammy Wetala (NTV TheBeat) and Timothy Code (Sanyu FM).

Fans won some goodies from Mountain Dew and enjoyed heavily discounted beers courtesy of Castle Lite and Nile Breweries, the main sponsors.

Action continues on Friday, October 4, 2024.
