Game 2: Uganda V PNG

  • PNG 77 all out
  • Uganda 78/7
  • Uganda won by 3 wickets

Uganda’s Cricket Cranes made history at the T20 Men’s World Cup in West Indies with a 3-wicket victory over fellow associates PNG.

Uganda made three changes to their playing XI with Juma Miyagi, Kenneth Waiswa and Frank Nsubuga coming in for Bilal Hassun, Ronak Patel and Henry Ssenyondo.

The luck of the toss was still with Brian Masaba who asked PNG to bat first on a wicket that was difficult to score runs.

The last meeting between the two sides in 2022 at the T20 Global Qualifiers in Zimbabwe was full of runs but at the grand stage, only 155 runs constituted the whole match.

PNG was pinned back in the first over with their inspirational leader Asad Vala trapped in front for zero by Alpesh Ramjani. This wicket triggered the collapse for PNG, failing to recover from a bad start with the bowlers picking wickets in regular intervals.

Frank Nsubuga went back in time to bowl the spell of his life, the most economical in the history of the World Cup. He only gave away four runs in his four overs and picked up two wickets with two maidens. The 43-year-old had the time of his life at the biggest stage of them all to keep the squeeze on PNG’s batting.

Juma Miyagi and Cosmas Kyewuta bowled with lively pace and while PNG found the odd boundary they failed to kick on and eventually bowled out for just 77.

The run chase felt like Deja Vu all over again for Cricket Cranes fans. Roger Mukasa failed to contribute anything and he was quickly followed by Simon Ssesazi and Robinson Obuya to leave the Ugandans railing at 6/3.

Riazat Ali Shah and Juma Miyagi calmed the nerves of many with a gritty partnership that took the sting out of the PNG momentum and even when Riazat fell with two runs required for the win, the damage had been done as Kenneth Waiswa and Brian Masaba knocked off the winning runs to give Uganda their first ever victory at the World Cup.

Riazat Shah

Riazat Ali Shah, for his gritty knock, picked up the Player of the Match award in the victory. Brian Masaba was brilliant with his bowling changes with each individual took responsibility to make sure there was no getting away from PNG. PNG were the favourites in the associates battle but Uganda found the performance that also earned the association 31k USD.

Uganda was very impressive with the ball and in the field but still haunted by the lack of runs from the top. Mukasa and Ssesazi still struggling under the lights but both should come good in the final two games for the team.

Uganda takes on hosts West Indies in their 3rd game on Sunday morning.
