After nine and half years in charge of Senegal’s Lions of Teranga, Aliou Cisse has been relieved of his duties.

The Afcon winning coach has been in charge since March 2015 and leaves as arguably the most successful coach in history of the national team.

The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) confirmed in a statement and thanked the ex-Senegal captain for the services.

“The FSG would like to thank Aliou Cisse for his good collaboration and his brilliant results at the head of various national selections and wishes him every success for the future,” a statement said.

It is said that the FSF wanted to continue with Cisse but the government who are responsible for paying the head coach thought otherwise.

Under Cisse, Senegal won the 2021 Afcon, their only title and also reached the 2018 and 2022 Fifa World Cups where they exited in the group stage and last 16 respectively.

Cisse was meant to name the Lions of Teranga squad for the forthcoming 2025 Afcon qualifiers against Malawi and the FSF is yet to announce an interim coaching team for the matches.

Meanwhile, Senegal currently sits second in their group, two points behind leaders Sudan, after four rounds of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. That campaign is set to resume next March.

His coaching career started when he joined the FSF in 2011 and he first worked with Senegal’s Under-23 team, including at the 2012 Olympics, before taking charge of the Teranga Lions following the departure of Alain Giresse.
