For the third consecutive day at the 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Amateurs Golf Open in Entebbe, there is a new face on the summit of the leaderboard.

Kenya’s Adele Balala led day one, Joseph Cwinya-ai bossed the subsequent round and Joseph Reagan Akena took charge of the situation on the third round.

Coming to the fourth and final round of action on Saturday, 31st August 2024, Akena is one shot ahead of the duo of Cwinya-ai and Titus Okwong.

Okwong recorded a bogie free round on the third day with the tournament’s best score so far, 3-under 68, surpassing the day one leader Balala who scored 2-under (69).

During round three, Akena scored level-par (71) to overtake the overnight leader Cwinya-ai.

The Lugazi Hills and Country club member commenced his day under slight drizzles minutes past 1 PM with a bogie score on the par-5 hole 1.

He then recorded a par on hole 2, a birdie on 3 and two successive pars on 4 and 5. He had a birdie on 6 before two bogies on 7 and 8 and completed the front 9 with a par score.

At the back nine, Akena was focused with successive pars on 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14, a birdie on 15 and ended the round with three pars on 16, 17 and 18.

Okwong had the best round of 68 and lies joint second with Cwinya-ai, on 218, chasing just one shot off the leader.

The main pressure group on the final day will have Akena, Cwinya-ai, Okwong and Kakeeto in what promises to be a thrilling day.

The second pressure group has the defending champion Godfrey Nsubuga, Michael Tumusiime, Samuel Bazaale and Ibrahim Ssemakula.

The top ten is completed with Abdallah Kakooza and seasoned Joseph Kasozi.

The final round of the gross players will be joined by the subsidiary cluster (group B) on the day that the closing ceremony will be held later.

About the Uganda Golf Open:

Since 1932, the Uganda Golf Open and its sponsors have evolved over the years.

This year and in the past seasons, Johnnie Walker is the lead sponsor with players from hosts Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, South Sudan and Rwanda.

H. Davidson won the inaugural edition. The open only missed out on two different occasions; between 1940-1947 (World War) and 1979-1980 (Political insurgency in Uganda).

Jinja Club’s legend Sadi Onito (Rest in Peace) has the record number of titles won (12) in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1991, 1994, 1995 and 1996.

The Open is the signature championship of the Uganda Golf Union (UGU).
