Victoria Pearls win 4th Kwibuka title in low-scoring thriller against Zimbabwe

Match Summary: Uganda V Zimbabwe A

  • Uganda 80/8
  • Zimbabwe A 78/9
  • Uganda by 2 runs

The final of the 10th edition of the Kwibuka Cricket Tournament lived up to the hype with the game going down to the last ball.

In a low-scoring thriller, the Victoria Pearls won the toss and elected to bat but were rattled early with the top order cleaned up cheaply to leave the three-time winners railing at 6/3.

Proscovia Alako (24) and Rita Musamali (15) dug deep to steady the ship but not for so long before Zimbabwe A struck and at 47/5 in 14 overs, Uganda could not kick on and could only finish on 80/8 in their 20 overs.

The Ugandan batting was challenged by some great swing bowling from Christina Mutasa (2/17) and the lively pace of Kelly Kudzai (2/9).

In the run chase, Uganda struck early to remove the dangerous Kelis Ndlovu but Captain Chiydeza Dhururu (22) and Loryn Phiri (27) put on a 48-run partnership that swung the game in the favour of Zimbabwe A.

However, the loss of both set batters in quick succession helped the Victoria Pearls put the squeeze on the tail with Captain Janet Mbabazi (5/10) and Consy Aweko (2/17) stepping up with the ball to leave 8 runs required for the win in the final over.

The young Lorna Anyait was given the responsibility of defending the 8 runs and she held her nerve to deliver a title for the Victoria Pearls, but it was not without drama. With 8 required off 3, Lorraine Pemhiwa struck a boundary to reduce the equation down to 4 off 2 balls, then on the next ball Uganda had an extra fielder outside the circle with a no ball called to reduce the equation to 3 off 2 balls but with no pace in the ball, the tail failed to wag as Lorraine was the last wicket to fall off the last ball to clinch victory for the Ugandans.

Uganda finally won the Kwibuka after reaching their second consecutive title of the annual women’s tournament.

Proscovia Alako finished second on the batting charts in a tournament where she sparkled in the middle order and struck the only century of the tournament.

Defending Champions Rwanda finished 3rd, Nigeria fourth, Kenya fifth, Botswana sixth, Malawi seventh and Cameroon eighth.
