More Details On The Food & Drug Administration’s Nationwide Ice Cream Recall

On Monday, June 24, the FDA issued the announcement with a notice shared via its official website. The association explained that the manufacturer “Totally Cool Inc. of Owings Mills, Maryland, is recalling multiple brands of ice cream products.” This is due to the products potentially being “contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.”

The association explained that “Listeria monocytogenes” is an organism that can cause severe and potentially fatal infections in kids, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Additionally, if pregnant women are infected, they can reportedly experience miscarriages and stillbirths.

Furthermore, the FDA noted that the infection can impact “healthy individuals.” If impacted, symptoms for those individuals include “high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.”

Lastly, the notice explained that the potentially impacted ice cream products were distributed nationwide.

Which Products Are Potentially Contaminated?

According to the FDA’s report, the recall affected 13 ice cream brands. These include Friendly’s, Abilyn’s Frozen Bakery, Hershey’s, Yelloh!, Jeni’s, Cumberland Farms, The Frozen Farmer, Marco, ChipWich, AMAFruits, Taharka, Dolcezza Gelato, and LaSalle.

According to the FDA, no illnesses have been reported to date. However, the association adds that consumers who have purchased the potentially impacted products should “return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.”

Meanwhile, Totally Cool, Inc. has reportedly “ceased the production and distribution of the affected products.”

“The company continues its investigation and is taking preventive actions,” the FDA’s notice adds. “No other products produced by Totally Cool, Inc. are impacted by this recall.”
