Uganda Red Cross Calls for a Culture of Kindness at Good Deeds Day Commemoration

Namugongo, Uganda:  The Director of Communications, Resource Mobilisation & Partnerships at the Uganda Red Cross Society, Irene Nakasiita, has called on Ugandans to embrace a culture of doing good and actively support humanitarian efforts by joining the organization.

Nakasiita made these remarks while serving as Guest of Honor at the Good Deeds Day celebration held at Olives School in Namugongo  on April 10, 2026.

The event brought together students, partners, volunteers, and community members in a shared commitment to acts of kindness, compassion, and service.

Addressing attendees, Nakasiita expressed heartfelt appreciation to the organizers, partners, and participants who contributed to the success of the event. She particularly commended individuals who donated blood, describing it as a powerful and life-saving act of generosity.

“I am deeply inspired by the spirit of giving demonstrated here today. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to building stronger, more resilient communities,” she said.

Nakasiita also expressed concern over reports that some hospitals sell blood to patients despite receiving it at no cost from national blood banks—blood that is voluntarily donated by citizens. She noted that such practices undermine the spirit of voluntary blood donation and risk discouraging donors from continuing to give.

“Blood is donated freely by compassionate individuals to save lives. It is disheartening to hear that some patients are being charged for this life-saving resource. This practice erodes public trust and threatens the sustainability of voluntary blood donation,” she emphasized.

Special recognition was extended to Nankunda of Raising Teens Uganda for the invitation and her inspiring leadership in mobilizing young people toward positive community action.

As Uganda joined the rest of the world in marking World Good Deeds Day, Nakasiita emphasized the importance of sustaining the momentum of kindness beyond commemorative events. She encouraged learners, partners, and the wider public to join the Uganda Red Cross and actively participate in humanitarian service.

“Together, we can continue to build resilience, save lives, and promote kindness. Let us lead by example and keep the spirit of ‘ubuntu’ alive,” she added.
