Uganda national boxing team, the Bombers has successfully returned home from Durban city, South Africa where they took part in the 2024 Mandela Boxing Championship.

The Bombers won five of the possible seven medals from this championship with a silver and four bronze medals.

The president of Uganda Boxing Federation Moses Muhangi has lauded the players for the brevity and great performance, highlighting important lessons from the championship to the boxers, umpires and judges.

“I thank the Uganda Boxers for the great effort undertaken at the 2024 Mandela Cup in South Africa. We won five of the seven medals, earning prize money. Our coaches did a great job and so did the umpires who officiated up to the final” Muhangi remarked upon return at Entebbe Imperial Hotel.

The team captain Ukasha Matovu who lost to DR Congo’s Ntumba to settle for bronze believes that this championship will prepare them for more upcoming international meets as he sings praise of the fans who turned up at the boxing arena in Durban.

“We faced experienced fighters at the Mandela Cup and learnt from them as well. The event was very good for us as boxers as we keep learning” Matovu remarked.

Female boxer Fatuma Nabikolo strongly asserts that the Mandela championship has further exposed her to international boxing as she picked key lessons from her opponents

“Our journey in boxing is transcending and the Mandela Cup has further exposed us to international boxing” Nabikolo said.

The learning curve from the Mandela Cup was not only beneficial to the boxers, but also spread out to the technical personnel as confessed by the head coach Patrick Lihanda.

“The boxers, coaches and umpires all had crucial lessons learnt from the Mandela Cup” Lihanda stated.

Uganda won 5 medals from the Mandela Cup out of the 7 boxers who traveled as the focus now switches to national boxing open happening at Lugogo Indoor Arena, Kampala that entered its second day on Tuesday, 23rd April 2024.
