UBOS report reveals growth of Aquaculture sub-sector.
Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) and partners disseminated The Uganda Aquaculture Census (UAC) Report 2025 launched by Hon. Amos Lugoloobi, Minister of State for Finance, Planning and Economic Development (Planning), alongside The Executive Director Dr. Chris N. Mukiza.
The report provides insights into the structure of the aquaculture sector in Uganda, including farming methods, distribution patterns, stock, production, and extension services among other variables. The data generated in the report will support planning in the Aquaculture sub-sector as the country progresses towards ensuring food security, income generation, and value addition for agricultural products.
Presenting the results of the Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025 at Statistics House on April 30, UBOS statistician Flavia Oumo said the comprehensive nationwide exercise revealed significant regional disparities, with Buganda topping all others in the number of aquaculture farms.
The objective of the survey was to establish the number of farms, types of facilities, production methods, and access to extension servicesKey Indicators and to generate data on the structure of the aquaculture sector and production levels,” she said.
Selected quaculture Farms recorded by the survey were 9,463 aquaculture farms , with 6,408 located in rural areas while in Buganda region they registered the highest number at 1,270 aquaculture farms.
The census, which covered the reference period from July 2024 to June 2025, recorded a total of 9,463 aquaculture farms across Uganda. Of these, Buganda accounted for 1,250 farms—representing 13.4 percent of the national total—making it the single largest contributor to the country’s aquaculture sector.
