The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Uganda, H.E Park Sung Soo has commended the role of the Uganda Taekwondo Federation (UTF) in their task of promoting the game in Uganda.

Officiating at the official launch of the annual Taekwondo ambassador’s cup was at the Indoor Arena in Lugogo, Kampala over the weekend, H.E Sung Soo saluted the federation, coaches, clubs and the coaches.

The Ambassador was flanked by the other officials from the Embassy of Korea in Uganda, the president of the Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) Dr. Donald Rukare, International Olympic Committee (IOC) member William Fredrick Blick, Uganda Taekwondo Federation president Dr Marvin Baryaruha, Taekwondo athletes and lovers.

“I give my thanks to the Uganda Taekwondo Federation. I would also like to express gratitude for the dedication and contribution of Taekwondo coaches from the different parts of the country and the players” the Ambassador expressed.

The Ambassador’s cup has been played since 2017 with the different clubs from Uganda and the neighbouring countries taking part.

“The tournament has since 2017 become a wonderful platform to showcase the Ugandan people’s love and passion for Taekwondo. Now, Taekwondo serves as an art and a means of connecting the people of Korea and bring them together in Uganda. Through Taekwondo, Ugandans and Koreans are getting much closer everyday, every month and every year” he spoke.

Spreading to the entire country:

His Excellency Park Soo believes that the game will spread from the forces (Police, UPDf and Prisons) to the rest of the country.

“I am hopeful that this Taekwondo boom spreads from the Ugandan military further to the entire country” he added.

He commended the work of Taekwondo Master Kim from Korea who is currently training 13 Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers to become instructors.

The Embassy of Korea also organized the K-Pop festival at the Yusuf Lule Auditorium in Makerere University with performances in dance, music and Korea speaking competition.
