The 2024 Kampala Club Squash championship was officially launched on Monday, 1st June at the famous center court of Kampala club.

The launch was graced by the Uganda Squash Rackets Association (USRA) president John Bosco Ahimbisibwe Tamwesigire, Dr Lucky Mlilo (president of Squash Federation of Africa), National Council of Sports representative James Kasumba as well as two players Michael Raymond Kawooya from Uganda and Rwanda’s Emmanuel Amuri.

This tournament swings off on Tuesday, 2nd June and will climax on Saturday, 6th June 2024 with over 70 players expected from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Happening at the same time of the tournament is the first ever Squash Federation of Africa refereeing course to be staged in East Africa with Dr Mlilo in charge as the main instructor.

Tamwesigire is humbled for the support from the National Council of Sports (NCS) who are meeting the costs of the tournament and the refereeing course.

“I am grateful for the support from National Council of Sports towards the smooth running of the Kampala club championship and the SFA refereeing course. The total prize money of Ug.Shs 5,000,000 will lift up the competitive spirit among spirit. We are humbled to host the refereeing course as Uganda, the first in the East African region” Tamwesigire noted.

Dr Mlilo who will officiate at the refereeing course as the main instructor is marking his first ever visit to Uganda and the entire East African region.

He cites the biggest high point for the sport as being admitted to the Olympics menu, effective 2028 in Los Angeles city, United States of America (USA).

“Squash in Africa is developing at a promising rate. I have conducted different courses in Egypt, Botswana and Nigeria. This is my first time in East Africa.” Dr Mlilo stated.

James Kasumba, the NCS representative cited talent identification and development as well as sports tourism among the benefits of this club championship that is also luring players from other countries as Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda.

Top seeded players as defending champion Paul Kasirye Kadoma, Michael Kawooya, Joweria Namugambe Mpomba (Uganda), Emmanuel Amuri (Rwanda), James Dalidi, Nimji Muqtadir, Jane Njeru (Kenya), and others will battle for the top honours.

The challengers cluster has Richard Ssendi, Emma Rodney, Isma Bwanika, Rossi Baggya, Solomon Okidi, Paul Sserulyo, Maurice Bua, Samuel Kyagulanyi, Mark Musinguzi, Joel Kasibante, Ali Ssewangudde, Jonathan Mwegamire, Vincent Kibira, Owen Agaba, Michael Achon, Ambrose Agumenaitwe, Cedric Sserwadda, Polline Agaba, Julian Ainomugisha, Elizabeth Musimenta, Safina Mugabe among others.

The outstanding players from the quarter finals will have a share of the total prize money kitty for Ug.Shs 5,000,000.
