It is always cheers and kudos for every golfer who stands out with perfect swing that culminates into a magical shot.
An eye catching eagle or hole-in-one shot (ace) is often celebrated to the brim in the fraternity.
Tanzanian female golfer Aalaa Riyza Somji will leave to forget the lake side par-71 Entebbe course.
Somji struck a beautiful ace on the par-3 hole 6 lit up the atmosphere during the second round of the 2024 Johnnie Walker Uganda Ladies Golf Open.
“To be honest, I was not expecting anything like this (an ace). My aim was just to put that ball on the green” She boldly confessed in a post-game interview with Kawowo Sports.
“It was 125 yards on the 6th hole. For me, It was in between clubs and I went with what my instincts said of going with a 9-iron” she added.
With a bunker on right of the par-3 hole 6, Somji aimed the left edge in a bid to land on the greens for easy putting.
“The pin was on the front and I wanted to avoid the bunker. After my shot, I heard the clapping and saying it is a hole-in-one. I got the ball and wrote a 1 on the score-card. It was least expected. I was happy and not happy at the same time” he recollected.
Somji lies 9th on the leaderboard of the silver category having played 7-over-79 on round one and ironically depreciating to 12-over-83 during the “bright” day of the ace.
She is hopefully of a strong finish come the third and final round on Saturday, 24th August 2024.
Uganda’s Martha Babirye dislodged the day one leader Hawa Wanyeche from the top after 36 holes of action.
A three-time winner of the ladies open, Babirye played 75 and 77 and takes a shot advantage over second placed Neema Olomi from Tanzania coming to the final round.
Olomi won this title in 2018, in Entebbe and looks forward her second title in as many years.
The two golfers will be in the main pressure group that tees off Saturday, alongside two other Tanzanian lady golfers Iddy Madina and Wanyeche.
