  • 1st Runners up: Ibrahim Ssemakula (Lugazi Hills) – 71
  • 2nd Runners up: Charles Junju (Mary Louise Simkins) – 74

Ladies:

  • Winner: Winnie Musuya (Lugazi Hills) – 79
  • 1st Runners up: Laura Natukunda (Toro club) – 80
  • 2nd Runners up: Bholim Ariana (Uganda Golf Club) – 82

The 2024 Hisense Uganda Junior Golf Open championship was successfully held at the lake side par-71 Entebbe club on Saturday, 17th August.

As many as 144 junior golfers from 11 clubs in Uganda graced this day-long championship blessed by fine sunny weather conditions.

The home club (Entebbe) hosted 10 other clubs; Mary Louise Simkins Namulonge, Uganda Golf Club, Lugazi Hills, Toro club, Kilembe Mines, Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, Jinja club, Mbale Sports Club, Tororo club and West Nile Club.

By close of business, Entebbe Cosmos Ociti and Lugazi Hills’ Winnie Musuya emerged as the overall male and female outstanding golfers.

Ociti, a scratch player scored 1-under-70 to emerge top in the male section whilst Musuya scored 8-over-79 to topple the rest of the females.

A senior five student at Entebbe Secondary School, Ociti had four birdies in 18 holes (3,4,14 and 15) with 9 pars (1, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, 18) and 5 bogies (2, 6, 8, 11, 17).

“I have been practicing well and today, I managed to keep my composure by playing well. I am excited for my victory and I look forward to playing in the main open with a top five position in sight” Ociti who earned a gold medal, trophy and 40 inch size Hisense Television screen remarked.

Musuya, like Ociti is also a national team junior player. She attributed her victory to good preparations.

“Before the tournament, I have been training well. The preparations back at home were good” Musuya noted.

Musuya was also rewarded with a gold medal, a trophy and a 40-inch television screen for her hard toiled efforts.

Ibrahim Ssemakula (Lugazi Hills) played level par (71) to take the male runners’ up berth; earning a silver medal and 32-inch size television screen whilst Charles Junju (Mary Louise Simkins) was 3-over- 74 for the second runners’ up place to win a bronze medal and micro-wave.

Laura Natukunda (Toro club) scored 9-over-80 to play second fiddle to Musuya; to take silver and 32-inch size Hisense Television screen.

Bholim Ariana (Uganda Golf Club) was third placed lady with 82; earning a bronze medal and Hisense Microwave for her efforts.

There were prizes for the nett category top performers.

Paul Habyarimana, tournament director lauded the sponsors, parents and the junior players for the collective effort to witness a tranquil championship.

“We had a very good day with fantastic weather. I thank all our sponsors especially Hisense our title sponsor and all the other partners. Thank all the parents for supporting the juniors. I commend our main celebrants; the juniors. I know there will be a healthy selection headache for the junior national team because there is a lot of talent.”

Serwano Walusimbi, captain of Entebbe Club stressed the essence of such a tournament, for it ensures continuity of the game beyond the horizons.

“I am glad for the day. I congratulate all the young men and women. You are the future of this game” Walusimbi remarked.

The chief guest Ambrose Tashobya; the chairman of the National Council of Sports (NCS) stressed the value of sport vis-à-vis education in this epoch.

“The future of Ugandan golf are the juniors. The future is bright. Sport is beneficial in so many ways. It prepares you as good future men and women. Be student athletes. Focus on education and your sport to secure yourself a very good future. Be dedicated to achieve in what you want to be.” Tashobya preached.
