"Museveni Is More Afraid of Besigye Than Bobi Wine" Top Ugandan Politician Allegedly Lectures NUP President on Getting Ready for State Power

Celebrated veteran political journalist turned lobbyist Richard Baguma has reportedly lectured National Unity Platform (NUP) Principal Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, on how to prepare for taking state power as President Museveni nears the end of his tenure.
Baguma told Bobi Wine to accept that he is currently the underdog in the ongoing succession battle. He noted that Bobi Wine still has much to learn to match influential figures like Museveni’s first son, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who also serves as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), and Museveni’s son-in-law, Odrek Rwabwogo, chairperson of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development (PACEID).
“I speak this in good faith, Museveni cannot be overthrown through these elections you are going in, even if his state power is taken in the way of Omar al-Bashir of Sudan or Muammar Gaddafi of Libya. The power will be taken by those who have been close to him, making it difficult for people like Bobi Wine,” Baguma said.
He explained that running a country is far more complex than many of Bobi Wine’s grassroots supporters believe. Baguma questioned how Bobi Wine’s team would handle international diplomacy, such as defending his government at the United Nations or in the United States.
Baguma urged Bobi Wine to accept guidance from experienced opposition leaders like Maj Gen Mugisha Muntu and Dr. Kizza Besigye, who have previously demonstrated knowledge in taking over power and maintain strong networks in key state institutions. He added that Museveni keeps a closer eye on Besigye than Bobi Wine because of Besigye’s experience and political capacity.
“Yes, Bobi Wine has significant support among the youth, especially in the ghettos, but they cannot help him take power. Museveni will use them against him by arresting, imprisoning, and intimidating them to demonstrate his authority,” Baguma warned.
The article further revealed that Museveni has acted decisively against threats from within his security network. For example, Lt Gen Henry Tumukunde, a former spy master, was arrested after allegedly attempting to infiltrate Bobi Wine’s youth groups and gain their support to challenge the government. Several youths involved in the plot remain imprisoned.
Kira Municipality legislator Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda noted that Museveni is gradually transferring state power to his son Muhoozi due to advancing age. He explained that Muhoozi often uses strong measures to assert control while learning the responsibilities of leadership. Ssemujju emphasized that elections present the best chance for opposition leaders to gain power and warned that missing this opportunity could make it harder in the future.
Baguma also cited historical precedent, noting that when Museveni captured power in 1986, he sought advice from experienced leaders like the late Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere and from Tanzania’s President Julius Nyerere to help establish governance structures. This, Baguma said, highlights the importance of seeking experienced guidance for successful leadership.
Meanwhile, discussions are reportedly ongoing between Museveni’s government and opposition parties, including the Democratic Party, Uganda People’s Congress, Democratic Front, and Forum for Democratic Change, to form a joint government and facilitate a peaceful transfer of power. While some opposition parties are alleged to receive funding from Museveni, they have denied these claims.
