Key institutions convene to discuss a unified management of 2026 general elections.
Uganda’s institutions in the electoral processes have come together for a joint Press Conference ahead of the 2026 Elections in a bold and unified call for peace, transparency and collaboration as they work toward free & fair elections.
The conference was organised by Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) attracted stakeholders in the management of elections to collectively reassure the public of each institution’s commitment to upholding a credible, transparent and peaceful electoral process
Themed “Building synergies and committing to peaceful, free and fair elections for the good of all” the briefing was held at Sheraton hotel on 4th December 2025 with representation from Uganda Police, Uganda Communications Commission, Electoral Commission, CSOs among others
The Chairperson UHRC Hon. Mariam Wangadya while delivering her remarks highlighted emerging trends that present risks to peace, security, and human rights.
She revealed that there is a rise of youth groups acting as vigilantes and political foot soldiers, particularly in the central region with expressions of identity-based politics; the rise of misinformation, and gender-related constraints on political participation.
She has called upon all stakeholders including; political parties and candidates, the electorate, security agencies, and the media to work together to ensure that the 2026 elections become a celebration of democracy, not a contest of hostility.
“Uganda must demonstrate that disagreement does not equal division, and that healthy competition need not lead to conflict. We must prioritize civic education and actively engage all stakeholders to ensure our democracy remains stable, peaceful, and inclusive. Our message is simple: peace Is everyone’s responsibility.”-Hon. Wangadya said
She added that “We need to prioritize peace and stability during Uganda’s electoral process. Abide by the law, avoid provocation, and protect our nation’s peace”
Dr. R. Waiswa from UCC urged media practitioners to ensure accurate and unbiased reporting during the electoral period.
The Commissioner of Police, (pictured above) Kyasiimire Dina, Ag. Director Legal and Human Rights services said “Our actions are not against any individual or party. They are about maintaining order, safety, and fairness for all as the electoral process unfolds”
She highlighted that that Police’srole is to protect life and property, prevent crimes, and ensure that candidates, voters, and electoral venues are secure.
