Baby Cricket Cranes were denied a victory by some valiant batting from visiting Kenyan youngsters in the second meeting between the sides.

Uganda won the toss and elected to bat first. Team Captain Chris Kidega was promoted up the order but the move never paid off as he was the first wicket to fall for the hosts.

Gerald Olipa (74) anchored the innings for the Baby Cricket Cranes with other notable contributions coming from Richard Sohera (29), Jonathan Nyiro (22) and Robert Obere (24) as the hosts finished on 203/9 in their 50 overs.

It was a great effort from the youngsters to bat their whole 50 overs a sign of growth and maturity which is a requirement for the longer format.

In the run chase, the visitors lost both openers cheaply but a 3rd wicket partnership worth 164 runs deflated the hosts with both Stian Smith (79) and Yvuraji Bhatyani (79) picking up half centuries along the way. However, both fell in quick succession and that gave Uganda a chance to crawl back into the game.

Chris Kidega (4/29) bowled an inspired spell to take the game deep. But with only seven runs required from as many balls, Richard Sohera could not keep the tail quiet and he was easy pickings with the visitors closing out the victory with a six.

It’s the second loss for the Uganda U-19 against Kenya who have picked up three wins on the bounce that virtually guarantees them a place in the final on Monday.

Uganda will need to come back strong tomorrow against Rwanda if they want to be in final.
