Mbale Heroes Football Club, an entity that features in the betPawa FUFA Big League, Uganda’s second tier football league has suffered a major set-back as the final bend of the 2023-2024 comes knocking.

This comes after the entire technical docket for the 1999 Uganda Cup winners threw-in the towel.

Head coach Asaph Mwebaze, assistant Juma Miburo and goalkeeping coach Sharif Kiiza Ssengomba all resigned from their positions with immediate effect.

Kawowo Sports’ David Isabirye established the underlying scenes, push-factors and facts to that sudden decision that leaves the club in a desperate situation.

Whereas Mwebaze is well known for his free-flowing football philosophy, building of play with patience from the back-line and romantic approach, a relatively big section of club fans remained unsatisfied.

Asaph Mwebaze

Some fans were openly critical of the playing style (methodology), team selection and in particular the relation with them (coaches-vis-a-vis the fans).

Unbearable circumstances happened during Mbale Heroes’ 1-all draw with Lugazi in Mbale when fans echoed their voices to criticize a subsistution call during the match.

This did not orgy well with the coach who had reasoned otherwise. After that game, some fans attacked him (the head coach) before he was rescued and the chaos continued as they followed him at his residence.

For a man well known to stand by his principles, Mwebaze could not stomach what happened to him.

Besides, there are conspiracies that a section of club officials and fans cited tribal inclinations and worse of all, there were grey patches with the payment system of salaries and other wages.

Perhaps, management remains open to react to such accusations of delayed payments.

A top club official who spoke on condition of annoymity confirmed that the working relations for the coaches and management had reached a boiling point.

According to the official, to save face, the coaches ought to action professionally with resignation notes that to face the sacking bug.

As Mwebaze as the others depart, in comes a former Mbale Heroes servant, Simon “Dunga” Ddungu who returns to serve the club christened as the “Surgons” at a time when most needed.
