"It's A Dangerous Thing Not Giving NRM Your Support" Museveni Warns Ugandans

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has praised members of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) in the Buganda region who lost in recent party primaries but chose to support the winning candidates. Speaking at State House Entebbe on Wednesday, September 17, Museveni called their actions a sign of political maturity and party unity ahead of the 2026 general elections.
“I want to congratulate you, and I can see the spirit of the National Resistance Army (NRA) is coming back. Go back and support the flag bearers,” Museveni said, commending the losing candidates for placing the party above personal ambition.
The President noted that NRM’s performance in Buganda has historically suffered due to divisions among party members. He highlighted that while the party could have won 60 parliamentary seats in the region, divisions led to only 31 seats being secured.
Museveni reminded NRM cadres of Uganda’s political past, cautioning against failing to unite under a common vision. He recalled how post-election divisions in the early 1980s and 1961 led to conflict and economic disruptions.
“Not supporting NRM is very risky; the country can be in total chaos, because if you have got people who don’t see that Uganda should be one, suppose they are the ones in charge of the country. What will happen?” Museveni asked, linking national stability to party loyalty.
The President emphasized that supporting NRM is not only about politics but also about ensuring peace, economic growth, and socio-economic transformation. He pointed to Uganda’s expanding industrial sector, including factories in Matugga, Kawempe, and Namanve, and stressed that national markets and regional trade rely on political stability.
Museveni also warned against engaging in politics without a clear ideological foundation. He highlighted the NRM’s pillars of patriotism, Pan-Africanism, democracy, and socio-economic transformation as guiding principles for governance.
“Politics must be about identifying problems and prescribing solutions, not just fighting for positions or personal gain,” Museveni said, reflecting on past struggles against Idi Amin and emphasizing the importance of purposeful leadership.
NRM cadres in Buganda pledged their continued support for the party. Hon. Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo, Vice National Chairperson for the region, thanked Museveni for his guidance and assured him of their commitment to restoring NRM’s strength in Buganda ahead of the 2026 elections.
The meeting was attended by senior government officials and party leaders, including Attorney General Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, Deputy Secretary General Rt. Hon. Rose Namayanja-Nsereko, and several MPs and ministers. The gathering underscored NRM’s focus on unity, ideological clarity, and strategic preparation for the upcoming elections.
