"I Confronted Bobi Wine Over Walukagga Bid After Information Leaking About NUP Undermining Me," Ssegona Reveals

Busiro East Member of Parliament, Medard Segona, has taken the media by storm, revealing a deep sense of frustration with his party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), and its leadership. Appearing on Kabaka’s 89.2FM CBS radio, Segona opened up about what he perceives as a deliberate attempt to undermine him within the party. He accused NUP’s president, Bobi Wine, of being behind the controversial decision to back musician-turned-politician Mathias Walukagga as the party's candidate for Busiro East MP, a move that caught many by surprise.
Segona’s outcry stems from reports that Walukagga, once a close ally, had been given preferential treatment by Bobi Wine to run against him. “I got information from inside Kavule about Walukagga’s plans to undermine me,” Segona said. This wasn’t just a rumor to him—it was a full-fledged betrayal. According to Segona, Walukagga had been going around telling residents in Busiro East that Bobi Wine had personally endorsed his candidacy, promising that the NUP ticket would be his.
The news of Walukagga’s sudden decision to challenge Segona for the NUP ticket raised eyebrows, especially considering that the two had worked together during the 2021 elections. Walukagga, a former mayor of Kyengera/Nsangi town council, had campaigned alongside Segona in previous elections, but now he was seemingly positioning himself as Segona’s main rival within the party. This shift in loyalty was all the more shocking given Walukagga’s humble beginnings and his previous close relationship with Segona.
What stung Segona the most was not just the rivalry with Walukagga but the apparent backing from Bobi Wine, which, according to Segona, made him feel betrayed. "I confronted Bobi Wine about Walukagga being his personal proxy in the race," Segona revealed. But the confrontation didn’t go as Segona had hoped. Bobi Wine reportedly trivialized his concerns, asking Segona to provide physical proof of Walukagga’s claims. “I didn’t have physical evidence,” Segona admitted, "but I could repeat it in front of Walukagga because that’s exactly what he has been telling people."
Segona’s decision to speak out on CBS came after his frustration reached a boiling point. He felt as though Bobi Wine had dismissed his worries and failed to take action in his defense. Despite his long-standing contributions to NUP, Segona now found himself at odds with the party leadership and feeling alienated.
The situation further escalated when the NUP Deputy Secretary General, Aisha Kabanda, spoke out in defense of the party’s decision to back Walukagga. Kabanda argued that while Segona was a skilled politician, his popularity had been declining in Busiro East, and there was a genuine concern that the party might lose the seat if Segona remained the candidate. “Segona’s popularity has waned,” she explained. “Walukagga was the right choice, considering the circumstances.”
However, Segona was far from convinced by Kabanda’s reasoning. In his view, the party had wronged him by sidelining his experience and contributions in favor of a newcomer with no proven track record. His anger also stemmed from the way Bobi Wine handled the situation, brushing aside Segona’s concerns without offering any meaningful resolution. To Segona, it felt as though NUP was trying to force out veteran politicians in favor of fresh faces, even if those fresh faces lacked the political depth and experience needed to maintain the party's influence.
The tension between Segona and Bobi Wine is indicative of a larger rift within the NUP party, which has seen its fair share of internal struggles. This isn’t the first time Segona has raised concerns about the direction of the party. He has been vocal about his disappointment with how NUP has managed certain issues, including allegations of embezzlement that recently rocked the party. Segona believes that Bobi Wine’s leadership is focused more on personal interests than the collective good of the party and its members.
Segona’s decision to go public with his frustrations has not only put his political future in question but also highlighted the divisions within the opposition ranks. Many are watching to see how the conflict between Segona and Bobi Wine will evolve, especially with the upcoming elections drawing near. While Segona remains defiant, claiming that he will not accept the party’s decision, the larger question remains: will NUP’s leadership continue to back Walukagga, or will Segona’s call for justice result in a change of course?
In the coming days, the Busiro East race is set to become one of the most closely watched political contests in Uganda. With Segona’s accusations of betrayal and Walukagga’s backing by Bobi Wine, the situation is far from resolved. Whether Segona can rally his supporters and challenge the party’s decision remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the NUP is facing a serious internal crisis that could have lasting repercussions for the party's future.
