How being a son of a priest exposed Elijah Kitaka to the darker side of church life

Elijah Kitaka has opened up about his difficult upbringing in the church, revealing how being the son of a priest exposed him to a reality that many never see.
Kitaka spoke about the heartbreak and confusion he experienced growing up within the walls of the church—an institution that many look to for comfort and guidance.

Church breaks hearts. Growing up in church as a priest’s son, I was traumatized by the things I saw and heard.
For many, the church is a sanctuary. But for Kitaka, it was often a source of emotional stress.
He shared that while outsiders may never truly understand what goes on behind the scenes, there’s a darker side to church life that is often hidden from public view.
The church breaks hearts and people will question themselves but get no answers.
Growing up in church made me draw holes, and it would put you in a position where you question yourself if what you see or hear is the truth or not. These things we see today have been there for ages.
According to Kitaka, the issues that plague modern churches—pastors engaging in public feuds, trading insults from the pulpit, and even performing more like comedians than spiritual leaders—are not new.
Being in church made me traumatized because I grew up with an existing faith, and I used to see light in church. But when I grew up, I started connecting dots and seeing things.
Sometimes I’d hear my priest father on the phone, and the things they’d speak about weren’t exactly reassuring—especially considering it was in my very home.
