There is excitement prior to the MTN Monthly tee back to school golf championship for the month of June 2024 on Saturday, 22nd June at the par-71 Entebbe club.

This tournament is unique in a way that is intended to raise money for education initiatives at St Joseph’s primary school, Katabi in Division A, Entebbe Municipality.

The proceeds will be channeled towards improving the toilet and sanitary health facilities at the school for the girls as well as procurement of scholastic materials like books, geometry sets, pens and pencils.

To this effect, Entebbe Club captain Serwano Walusimbi has rallied the golfers and well-wishers to support this noble cause.

I humbly call upon the golfers to come and play in the MTN back to school monthly tee golf tournament as we support education. All the proceeds will be channeled to the improvement of facilities at St Joseph’s primary school, Katabi. There is need to buy sanitary towels for the girls who outnumber the boys as well as the scholastic materials. There is also need for a special girl child toilet facility since there is congestion at the current one which is shared by the boys as well. Serwano Walusimbi, Entebbe Club captain

Caroline Makhoha, head teacher at St Joseph’s Primary School Katabi narrated the general current status of the school whose present population stands at 1004 pupils.

St Joseph’s primary school Katabi was started in 1952 and the school is now 72 years with the same structures which are really old. We have a population of 1004 pupils with 522 girls and 482 girls. There is a challenge for the girl child who lack the sanitary towels since they come from relatively poor families. They shun coming to school in their periods and miss classes for at least 4 days in a month and in a term of three months, they miss 12 days which affects their performance in class. They go to the same toilet as the boys, so there need for their special toilet with a washroom. There is also need to have scholastic materials as books, pens, reams of paper, sets and pencils. Some of the primary seven pupils at the school expressed delight at the initiative by Entebbe Club and MTN Uganda.

Barbra Apollot, a 14-year-old P7 pupil who stays in Katabi Barracks village is delighted by the development.

“We are humbled by MTN Uganda and Entebbe Club for the plans to help us with sanitary products, scholastic materials and improvement of sanitary services. Sometimes, we find problems with padding and miss classes because the boys may laugh at us when in periods. The development to help us is welcome.” Apollot appreciated.

Ronald Ofuti, another P7 pupil is confident that the scholastic materials will further boost their education.

“Having scholastic materials will help us with class work assignments. We are happy by the golfers and MTN Uganda” Ofuti who stays in Katabi Busambaga revealed.

The MTN back to school golf tournament is in honour of MTN Group’s 30th anniversary, where MTN is organizing a special edition of the flagship employee volunteerism programme 21 days of y’ello care. This will be extended to 30 days of y’ello care.

The campaign this year is themed “Learn today, lead tomorrow”, focusing on bridging the educational divide in underserved communities across MTN’s operational footprint.

On Friday, 21st June 2024, MTN Uganda upgraded a shallow well at the Ongongoja secondary school, a bid intended to combat water scarcity at the school based in Usuk sub county, Katakwi district.
