Egypt Commits $100 Million to Boost Hydro Projects in Nile Basin, Including Uganda

The Egyptian government has confirmed plans to support Nile Basin countries, Uganda included, in developing hydroelectric dams along the Nile River.

This announcement came from Egypt’s Minister of Water, Professor Hani Sewilam, during the grand opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, an event attended by dignitaries and global leaders.

The $1 billion museum, inaugurated under the theme “Celebrating Egypt’s Ancient Civilizations,” stands as a testament to the country’s rich history and cultural achievements. Speaking at the ceremony, Sewilam revealed that Egypt is prepared to invest $100 million (roughly Shs360 billion in Ugandan currency) to assist Nile Basin nations in harnessing the river’s hydropower potential.

Uganda was represented at the event by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, standing in for President Yoweri Museveni, who is currently on a nationwide tour ahead of elections. Nabbanja held bilateral discussions with Prof. Sewilam, accompanied by her delegation, including Deputy Ambassador to Egypt, Lt. Gen. Charles Angina.

During the talks, Nabbanja expressed appreciation for Egypt’s proposed support but urged collaboration to ensure environmental protection along the Nile, stressing the importance of balancing development with ecological sustainability.

In his remarks, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi hailed the museum’s opening as a historic moment, declaring, “Today we celebrate the Grand Egyptian Museum and embark on a new chapter in both our history and future.”

The Grand Egyptian Museum, valued at $1 billion, is scheduled to open its doors to the public next week, offering visitors an extensive collection of artifacts and exhibitions highlighting Egypt’s ancient civilizations.
