Court orders Odere, Katatumba to pay $202 Million to Shumuk for ending their Business Dispute
The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has directed Lawyer Charles Odere and Katatumba family to Businessman Mukesh Shukla, proprietor of Shumuk Aluminium Industries, to conclude thei long-running criminal trial without further delays.
Chief Magistrate Christine Nantege issued the stern warning during proceedings in which Shukla appeared.
The 16-year property Business dispute between the family of the late businessman Bonny Katatumba and Shumuk Group proprietor Mukesh Shukla has become a prolonged trail that recently led to the suspension of Lawyer Charles Odera by Law Council which he said stemmed from this case.
The allegations stem from claims that between November 2020 and November 2021, that includes the accused obtain8ng approximately USD 27,950 and more than Shs116 million from complainant Shahid Mahmood Alvi of Alvi Auto Village Ltd and some other claims.
The magistrate cancelled previous sureties and ordered fresh ones. Shukla’s wife and son stood as guarantors, assuring the court of his future attendance.
Chief Magistrate Nantege emphasized the need to bring the matter to a close and fixed July 15, 2026, as the final date for continuation of the hearing, directing that cross-examination must be completed on that day.
Court records indicate that the dispute between the Katatumba family and Shukla has stretched for more than 16 years, generating multiple lawsuits, appeals, criminal complaints, and enforcement proceedings. The matter has become one of Uganda’s most closely watched commercial and property disputes.
Shukla, business interests span manufacturing, real estate, hospitality, and other sectors remaining one of Uganda’s most recognizable business figures, with substantial investments across various sectors of the economy. He has also maintained a presence in politics and public affairs, earning both strong supporters and vocal critics.
