Baby Cricket Cranes beat Kenya U-19 when it mattered most in the final of the Easter Youth 50 Over Series in Jinja.
In a low-scoring thriller, the hosts prevailed after losing twice to Kenya during the round-robin.
The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first. Gerald Olipa (55) continued to excel with the bat with a well-timed half-century. The only other help came from Robert Obere (25) with Uganda U-19 finishing on 123 all out in 34.3 all out.
The low score put the unbeaten Kenyan U-19 side in a prime position to clinch the final. However, the hosts turned in a clinical performance with the ball that earned them the bragging rights.
The slow bowling options of Gurjivan Singh (3/15) and Ali Balidawa (3/19) were the catalysts of Kenya’s collapse with Captain Christopher Kidega (2/17) backing them up to skittle Kenyans out for 76 runs inside 37 overs.
Kenya U-19 failed to win when it mattered most having won four out of four enroute to the final. Uganda had twice lost to Kenya in the round-robin games but found a way of winning in the final.
The series featured Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda as the junior sides continued to prepare for the U-19 World Cup qualifiers coming up for all three sides. Rwanda will be competing in the Division 2 Africa Qualifiers in Malawi in September while Kenya and Uganda will be at the Qualifiers in 2025.
