"Anyone Scared of Jail Should Leave the Struggle," Says Bobi Wine to NUP Supporters

National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has warned his supporters that anyone who fears imprisonment should leave the struggle. Speaking to NUP members at the party headquarters in Makerere-Kavule, Bobi Wine said the election period is likely to bring increased arrests of opposition figures.
Bobi Wine claimed he had received information indicating that the government plans to arrest many people close to him. “If you fear prison, please leave the struggle. I have information that they’re planning to arrest everyone around me,” he said, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
He urged his supporters to remain fearless, stressing that the struggle for change requires courage and commitment. According to him, those unwilling to face potential imprisonment should step aside to allow committed members to lead the movement.
The NUP president revealed that he will be nominated on the same day as President Yoweri Museveni, scheduled for September 23. This sets the stage for a highly charged political contest ahead of the 2026 elections.
“Since he has an after-nomination rally at Kololo, we shall also hold ours in Katwe. Those who are scared should not come. We are in a real struggle and there’s no room for fear,” Bobi Wine said, signaling his determination to mobilize supporters despite potential threats.
Bobi Wine’s statements come amid growing tensions as Uganda approaches its next presidential election. Opposition leaders have faced repeated arrests in recent years, and many fear that this trend may intensify as the campaign period begins.
He also emphasized that this period marks the start of a protest vote against the current regime. By holding rallies and mobilizing supporters, Bobi Wine aims to challenge the status quo and push for political change.
Security measures have already been tightened in the country, with the Special Forces Command (SFC) expected to guard all presidential candidates. Analysts say this adds to the tension and underscores the high stakes of the upcoming elections.
Bobi Wine’s warning highlights the risks that opposition members face in Uganda. Despite the threats, he called on his followers to remain committed, framing the struggle as a fight for democracy and justice.
As the election draws near, the NUP president’s message is clear: courage and determination are necessary for political participation, and fear of imprisonment should not prevent people from standing up for their beliefs. The coming weeks are likely to be a decisive moment for the party and the country as a whole.
