96th AFC Leopards, Gor Mahia derby ends in stalemate

The 96^th Mashemeji derby between Kenya’s two biggest clubs ended in a goalless draw at the refurbished Nyayo stadium, Nairobi on Sunday.

The match, twice suspended for lack of a suitable venue to host a game of its magnitude was attended by a big passionate crowd with reports it fetched over Ksh. 7.3 million (approximately 207 million Ugshs).

It was the first time in a long time that the fixture was played at Nyayo, the second biggest stadium in Kenya, one of the stadia being prepared to host CHAN in August and Afcon 2027.

With either side not creating enough chances, a goalless draw was the fairest result and this leaves K’Ogalo in 3^rd place with 43 points from 24 games, five behind leaders Police who have played one more game while Ingwe are 5^th with 37 points.

Meanwhile, the draw means that both sides have drawn 36 times with Gor Mahia winning 33 while AFC Leopards have amassed 28 wins.  

The two sides face off again this weekend in the second-round match which will be hosted by Gor Mahia at the same venue.
