Welden High School emerged as the best in the recently held 2024 Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) football championship for Mbarara city.

Owned by Yasin Mugabe, Welden High School won both the zonal and Mbarara district championships, emerging unbeaten in as many games.

In the Mbarara city zone C final, Welden High School humbled St Peter’s SS 2-0 courtesy of strikes from Hussein Barrack and Kenny Muwanguzi.

Hannington Oyirwoth scored a brace and Hussein Barrack added the other for Welden High School’s 3-0 victory over Nyamitanga during the District finale.

They scored 26 goals in total and conceded just once in 10 matches.

Jajja Noah Mugerwa, head coach at Welden High School attributes the good performance to early preparations, the good will of the school management and the brilliant players.

“We commenced the preparations for the team quite early. The school management has also been fully supportive as well as the excellent players who gave their best foot forward in all matches played” Mugerwa noted.

Mugerwa’s back-room staff has Gaddafi Kawalya (first assistant), Faizal Ssempijja (second assistant) and Muzafaru Hassan (fitness coach).

The supportive administrative wing has Yasin Mugabe as team president, Zam Mugabe (team manager), Dr Andrew (team doctor), Badru, the technical director and Newton, the games teacher.

Welden High School is now set to represent Mbarara city at the Western Uganda regionals set to be hosted in Ibanda district in the coming weeks.
